There is no single number, and the honest reason is that a published price is a price for a standard house. Four things move yours. The usable capacity you need. Whether the battery goes onto solar you already have or in with a new system. How far the wall is from the meter. And whether the switchboard has room for what is going in.

What you get from us is one written price for your house with every line in it, model numbers included, and the federal discount already taken off. If something changes after that you hear why before any work happens. It does not turn up on the invoice.

It is arithmetic, so here is the arithmetic. Take the battery's usable capacity, multiply it by the federal deeming factor for the month it goes in, and that is a number of certificates. Multiply those by what a certificate is worth and that is the discount.

For an install today the factor is 6.8 and we price a certificate at $36. Capacity is tiered: the first 14 kWh of usable capacity counts in full, the next 14 kWh at 60%, anything above 28 kWh at 15%. Nothing above 50 kWh of usable capacity counts at all.

Run it on whatever battery you are being quoted and you should land on the same number we do. If a quote will not show you its working, that is the thing to ask about.

The accredited retailer handles the certificates, so you never lodge a claim or touch a form.

The federal discount comes off the price at the point of sale. The ACT loan can then finance what is left to pay.

That part is federal, so it works the same in the ACT and in NSW. What your state adds on top is different in each, and it is on the rebates page.

Work it out for your battery

Not on a date: it shrinks. The discount is worked off a deeming factor set by the date your system goes in, and the rate steps down every six months until 2030. The same battery is worth less the longer it waits.

Nothing is backdated to the day you signed, which is why the install date is the thing to pin down in a quote rather than the quote date.

The federal program in full

Size it off your evening. What matters is the kilowatt-hours the house uses after the sun goes down, because that is what a battery has to cover. It is already in your bill.

Bigger is not automatically better. Capacity beyond your evening never cycles, and the federal discount is tiered by usable capacity, so the last few kilowatt-hours of a very large battery are close to full price. Where you have twelve months of meter data we size off that rather than off an average house.

How big a battery

The design decides it, and you do not have to. Three things set the number. How much power the house uses while the sun is up. How much roof faces the right way once shading is taken off it. And what your switchboard and your network's export limit will carry.

A bigger array on a roof that cannot take it is money spent on panels that get turned down. We measure the roof on the day, not off a satellite image, and the panel count comes back with the design.

How a system is designed

It turns on one thing you already know: how much of your power you use while the sun is up. Every kilowatt-hour you use as it is made is one you do not buy. Every one you export earns a feed-in tariff, and those have fallen a long way.

That is also the argument for a battery. It moves the middle of the day to the evening, which is when most houses actually use the power. We would rather show you that on your own bill than on an average one.

What a system costs to run

The panels make more than the house uses in the middle of the day. Without a battery that surplus goes out to the grid for whatever the feed-in tariff pays. With one, it charges the battery first and the house runs off it after dark.

Everything else is control: what the system does when the forecast is poor, when the peak rate starts, and when the street goes down. That part is software, and it is most of the difference between two batteries with the same number on the box.

Not all of them, and it is worth checking on all three quotes. The ones we fit do, and how much of the house depends on what you ask for. A whole-home backup runs everything the battery can carry; a smaller one runs a nominated set of circuits: the fridge, the lights, the internet, a power point or two. Which you get is a switchboard decision and it is made at the visit.

The changeover is automatic. You may see the lights blink and then the house carries on, and the battery recharges off the roof the next day while the street is still out.
