Battery Booster Program β What We Know So Far
β Note: The Battery Booster Program is a Federal Labor election promise and is not guaranteed to proceed unless the Labor Government is re-elected.
β What Is the Battery Booster Program?
The Battery Booster Program is a proposed federal initiative aimed at making home battery systems more affordable for Australian households. Announced by the Albanese Labor Government, the program is designed to:
Provide a 30% discount on the upfront cost of purchasing a home battery for households with rooftop solar.
Support the installation of 50,000 household batteries across Australia.
Commence from 1 July 2025, pending Laborβs re-election.
The program will be delivered through the existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
π° How Much Will You Save?
Rebate value: 30% off the cost of a home battery system
Annual savings:
Households with existing solar adding a battery could save up to $1,100 per year.
Households installing both solar and a battery could save up to $2,300 per year.
These savings represent up to 90% of a typical familyβs electricity bill.
π Who Is Eligible?
To qualify for the rebate:
You must own your home.
The battery system must be installed by a Clean Energy Council (CEC)-accredited installer (like SunStak).
The battery must be connected to a new or existing solar photovoltaic (PV) system.
The system must be grid-connected.
Rentals and off-grid homes are likely excluded.
Batteries installed before 1 July 2025 will not be eligible for the rebate.
π Why Add a Battery?
Adding a battery to your solar setup can:
Reduce your power bills even further.
Provide energy security during outages.
Shift your usage away from expensive peak times.
Improve your solar systemβs return on investment.
Open up future opportunities like Virtual Power Plants (VPPs).
β³ Whatβs the Timeline?
Program starts: 1 July 2025 (if Labor is re-elected).
Final details: Rebate values and application processes are still pending.
