What is the Next Gen program?

The Next Generation Energy Storage (Next Gen) Program provides ACT households with $4000 toward the purchase of a typical battery storage system. The $25 million Next Gen program is supporting the roll out of up to 36 megawatts of smart battery storage and is one of the largest roll-outs of household batteries in the world.

The current rebate provides $825 per kilowatt (kW) output, up to a maximum of 30 kW. For most households this amounts to about a $4000 contribution toward the installation of a smart home battery system.

More information can be found on the ActSmart website

What is battery storage?

Battery storage allows households two main benefits not possible with solar:

  1. Store solar energy throughout the day or from the grid and supply it at night when electricity prices are higher

  2. Maintain power supply during a blackout

Battery storage has improved rapidly over the last couple of years, with many batteries now sophisticated enough to pay for themselves with the warranty period.

How do I access the program?

To access the Net Gen program start by contacting us to learn more. There are some restrictions which may limit households involvement in the program. For example, the energy storage device must:

  • by a new storage device which has not already received the rebate

  • be connected to the electricity network

  • have a minimum number of solar panels connected

  • meet all requirements of the Next Gen program, including being smart batteries and products meeting minimum requirements

  • comply with ACT electricity legislation and relevant Australian and international standards

What is a smart home battery system?

A Smart home battery has the ability to record and report it’s operational data to the ACT Government to allow the development and planning of large scale virtual power plants. A virtual power plant is a serial of connected battery storage devices which are controllable by a network operator such as Evo Energy.

Households with smart batteries will be able to voluntarily enrol in Virtual Power Plants which helps reduce payback times and help homeowners make the best use of their energy. There are many structures of virtual power plants. Some provide an ongoing payment for participation as well as fixed amount per kW sold back to the grid.

Households will have the option to voluntarily enrol in any Virtual Power Plant which delivers the most value to them.
